Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Deanna Smith – also known as Smithuoso – is a music composer who specializes in bringing stories to life through music. She graduated from Texas Christian University in 2021 with a Bachelor's of Fine Arts, with an emphasis on Film Music Composition.

Deanna has always had a love for music from an early age, playing violin in her schools' top orchestras and singing in their top choirs. This affinity for music was doubled when it came to film and video game composing, playing games on long car rides to guess what film the soundtracks that came on the radio were from. However, it wasn't until high school that she began seriously writing music when an injury prevented her from performing. During her senior year, Deanna's piece Life's Song received the Award of Excellence on the district level of the Reflections Program, and her piece Vexation was selected among five to be featured at the Dallas Museum of Art in the Young Master's Program.

The summer of her sophomore year at TCU, Deanna was accepted into the Palomar Film Scoring Workshop in San Diego, where she studied for ten intensive days under the great composers of film, tv, and video games Larry Groupe (Straw Dogs, The Contender), Roger Neill (Mozart in the Jungle, King of the Hill), George S. Clinton (Austin Powers series, Mortal Kombat), Garry Schyman (Bioshock series, Shadow of Mordor), and Rick Marvin (Grimm, Surrogates), and got her score professionally studio-recorded by Jason Larocca (Godzilla, Aquaman). During the summer after her graduation from TCU, Deanna was accepted into the NYU Film Scoring Workshop (working with noted composers Mark Snow [X-Files, Smallville] and Michael Levine [Cold Case, Siren]), the NYU/BMI TV Scoring Workshop with a full-ride scholarship (working with noted composers Sean Callery [24, Homeland], Mac Quayle [Mr. Robot, Feud], Nathan Barr [Carnival Row, True Blood], and Blake Neely [Arrow, Riverdale]), and the NYU Scoring for Video Games Workshop (with noted composers Garry Schyman [Bioshock series, Shadow of Mordor] and Tom Salta [Halo, Killer Instinct]).

Whether it be through film, games, or podcasts, Deanna makes sure that the feelings and the story that you are telling is enhanced through her individually catered compositions. Deanna enjoys a wide range of music genres and is also a very talented visual artist. This inherent attention to detail helps her pinpoint the tone and feeling the client or director is looking for.

Deanna is currently the lead composer of the podcast "still..." by The Reporter's Notebook.

Why Smithuoso? Why the bear?

"I’ve often been asked why I chose the name Smithuoso. Well, I am my own brand of musician and artist. I’m in no way a virtuoso, I am my own unique being and bring my own unique ideas to art of all kinds. I am a Smith-uoso. Oso, however, also means bear in Spanish (which is ironically wonderful given my Mexican heritage). So I would often hear why the bear?

"The rainbow bear in my logo has always been very special to me. It is modeled directly after a real teddy bear that I’ve had from my late grandfather since I was two years old. It’s one of my most prized belongings, and I couldn’t think of a better way to honor him."
